Living in Fremont County
Gateway to Yellowstone National Park, Henrys Lake trout fishing, and St. Anthony Sand Dunes.
Fremont County real estate stretches from the farm country around Saint Anthony and Ashton north toward Yellowstone National Park and the Montana border. It is one of the largest and most rural counties in East Idaho, with irrigated farms along the Henry's Fork, the Saint Anthony Sand Dunes, and forest and mountain land along the Continental Divide. Buyers come here for space, scenery and room to farm or ride.
Fremont County Economy & Jobs
Agriculture drives the southern half of Fremont County, where the Egin Bench and the land around Ashton and Saint Anthony support potatoes, grain and livestock. Outdoor recreation and tourism tied to Yellowstone and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest support businesses along the U.S. 20 corridor. The Idaho Department of Correction's St. Anthony Work Camp is also located in the county seat.
History of Fremont County
In the fall of 1810, Andrew Henry built the first American fur-trading post west of the Rocky Mountains on Conant Creek, later moving it to the Henry's Fork, the river that still bears his name. Farm settlement followed construction of the Egin Canal in 1879, with Parker established in 1883, Saint Anthony in 1888 and Marysville near Ashton in 1889. Fremont County was created in 1893 from Bingham County and named for explorer John C. Fremont; it originally covered all of northeastern Idaho, and Madison, Jefferson and Clark counties were later carved from it. The Fremont County Courthouse in Saint Anthony is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Towns & Communities in Fremont County

- Parker, Teton & Newdale — Small farm communities on the south side of the county, close to Rexburg and Saint Anthony, where homes on acreage are common.

Commute & Getting Around
U.S. Highway 20 runs the length of Fremont County, linking Saint Anthony to Rexburg in about 15 minutes and continuing north through Ashton toward West Yellowstone. Idaho Falls Regional Airport is roughly an hour from Saint Anthony. Winter weather is a real factor on the county's northern roads, so plan for it if you are buying north of Ashton.
Recreation & Outdoors in Fremont County
The Saint Anthony Sand Dunes cover roughly 10,600 acres just west of town and draw off-highway riders from across the West. Upper and Lower Mesa Falls on the Henry's Fork are among Idaho's most photographed waterfalls, reached by the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway from Ashton. A portion of Yellowstone National Park lies within the county, and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest offers hunting, snowmobiling, fishing and camping.
Land, Acreage & Horse Property in Fremont County
Fremont County offers some of the largest parcels in East Idaho, from irrigated farms on the Egin Bench to forested and recreational ground in the north. Because the county is entirely rural, well, septic, road access and winter maintenance matter as much as acreage. Valorie's List only labels horse property when the MLS reports livestock permitted, so confirm zoning and water rights on any land you are considering.
Cost of Living & Home Prices in Fremont County
Fremont County's housing stock is a mix of farm properties, small-town homes and recreational property, and nearly half of its housing units were seasonal or otherwise not occupied year-round at the 2020 Census. That recreational demand can push prices for scenic and wooded land above the farm-town averages. See the market snapshot on this page for current figures from active Snake River MLS listings.
